wishing

I wish I could walk properly lol.
It's frustrating to have the limp and a stiff and swollen knee that shuts down your quad. SIGH.

Thanks to Aunt Roz/Uncle Russ for the cool popup flowers card. Really made my day :)

Are you still icing the knee for swelling? Taking meds for reducing swelling and inflammation?

Could you gently exercise the leg in the swimming pool? (With help, or course!)

Hope your abrasions are healing well! And are you walking without crutches still? And are you able to bend the knee a little more than you were over the weekend?

Your improvements are probably going to be baby steps ;) for quite awhile, but any improvement is cause for happiness!

Love, Mom

Lisa, I was just reading some of the posts from other ACL surgery people -- mainly post-op.

Just passing along something I learned when I was facing a hysterectomy. You know me, I researched it like crazy, just like you have been doing. And some of those sites scared me to death -- people talking about all the pain, swelling, life changes.

I mentioned what I had read to my doctor, and he was astounded. He said his patients had never told him they were suffering like what I had read. Well, I took what he said with a grain of salt.

But you know what? My experience with surgery was so much better than all of those people posting in the forums.

When I asked my doctor about it, he said it was due to the physical shape I was in before the surgery, my positive attitude, and to my doing my walking and exercises per his directions.

SO many people were depending on me to get well as quickly as possible! That was my motivation.

He said many people aren't in good shape before surgery, they are mentally fighting the surgery (negative vibes!), and they balk at doing what they need do -- exercising and eating right. And then they gripe about how badly everything went. Doctoring is a partnership with the patient. The patient has to do his/her part, too.

So, try not to worry too much, do your exercises, eat healthy, get good sleep, and do nice things for yourself!

Maybe you're right to consider getting a puppy. Maybe a puppy would give you that extra motivation to get you moving and to do your exercises and walking. Someone would be depending on YOU!

Lots to think about! Love you! Mom

Wish you could come home with the 'old folks' for some relaxing days of loving care.

Your Mom is right that attitude in which you approach surgery and rehab is instrumental in your success. I read a lot about ACL injuries and found that there were primarily two groups: those that did not have much of a problem and those that said it was the worst thing they ever done. I decided before I had the surgery that I was going to be one of the positive people. There was no doubt in my mind. I could not wait to get my knee fixed so that I was on my way to having a strong and stable knee. I worked hard and kept my mind focused on the end result.
